Brain Writing — for facilitators

Brain Writing generates ideas silently and in parallel: each participant builds on provocations drawn from others' ideas. A divergent tool — like Brainstorm without the talking.

Samvinas

  • Give a clear, open Prompt, as you would for a Brainstorm.
  • Seed it with a stimulus — or pipe in starting ideas from an earlier tool — so the first screens have something to build on.
  • Then give people a little time; the rounds do the rest. Each participant is handed others' ideas as springboards, so the thinking cross-pollinates without anyone speaking.

Brain Writing produces idea items, and can consume them as seed stock — connect its Source to an earlier tool to start from existing material, and pipe its harvest onward like any brainstorm's.

Paper and pen

You need: one A4 sheet per person ruled into a grid — three columns, five or six rows — a pen each, and a timer.

  • Write the prompt where everyone can see it. Each person writes three ideas in the top row — five minutes, in silence.
  • On the bell, everyone passes their sheet to the left. Read the ideas above, then add three more in the next row — build on, twist, or combine what's there.
  • Repeat until the sheets are full; five or six rounds with six people yields a hundred-odd ideas.
  • The failure mode: people ignoring the sheet and starting from scratch each round. Say it up front — react to what you've been handed.
  • Harvest: read the best aloud, or cut the sheets into strips and number them so they can be dot-voted or clustered next.

When & why

Reach for Brain Writing when a spoken Brainstorm would be lopsided — a few voices dominate, the topic is sensitive, or the group simply thinks better in writing.

This is a divergent step: quantity first, judgement later.

  • Silence is the feature, not a limitation — quieter voices contribute on equal terms.
  • The builds are the point: ideas that have passed through three hands are usually stranger and better than first thoughts.
  • What usually follows: Clustering to make sense of the harvest, or Voting to converge on it.
